FOREWORD.


Dear partners,

employees and friends of BPW, we live in an era of digital revolution and disruptive innovation. And BPW is right in the midst of it: as one of the leading companies in the transportation industry, we not only anticipate global and societal megatrends, we also shape and engage with them.

This enthusiasm for innovation has a long tradition: it began in 1898 in a hydropowered hammer mill, where innovative patent axles for car-riages were produced. This spared vehicle operators the daily task of lubricating with cart grease, which in turn saved time, effort, and resources. Since then, "Bergische Patentachsenfabrik Wiehl" has become a globally active group of companies with more than 6,900 employees.

For almost 120 years we have been enabling vehicle manufacturers and operators to achieve the highest level of innovation, efficiency, safety and profitability in transport. What is more, we continue to use hydropower as a source of energy. This continuity is based on values that are typical of an owner-operated, family-run company.

For generations, BPW has been pursuing, refining and further developing the principles of "sustainability" and "corporate responsibility" that are now very familiar. Our values are reflected in our strategies, products and services, as well as in our management and corporate culture. And they provide us with guidance in a time of change.

Since every path begins with a first step, this first report highlights the initiatives adopted by BPW Bergische Achsen KG. The parent company is the precursor and core of BPW Group, whose businesses operate independently, but share the same values. For this reason, we will be reporting on the progress of the global group as well in the future.

VALUES.

IDENTITY, INTEGRITY AND INNOVATION.

Sustainability adopts a perspective that spans generations, not just the short term.

Doing business responsibly and with a view to the long term has marked BPW's identity and provided security and orientation since its beginnings in the 19th century, throughout fundamental industrial changes, crises, and wars, and in the face of the current digital revolution. Shareholders have felt personally connected to the company, as have employees and customers – in some instances, for generations. BPW employee surveys consistently show the special importance employees attach to identifying with their company, trusting their employer, and having a sense of belonging. Identity and integrity characterise BPW's basic strategic guidelines as well as its management culture. These values are also reflected in the company's environmental and sustainability policies, and determine the manner in which we interact with our employees, customers, and business partners. It is on this basis that BPW creates a climate of innovation, which motivates our employees and makes the company attractive to young talent.

 

SUSTAINABILITY AS A STRATEGY.

We think transport

BPW sees itself as a pioneer and innovation leader in the transport industry. The corporate claim we think transport stands for a deep and comprehensive understanding of the industry. It focuses on the needs of customers as well as on medium and long-term technological, economic, environmental and social developments. Our know-how is the starting point for innovation and the incremental optimisation of products, processes and services.

International mobility and system partnership

In 2012 BPW revised its strategic orientation. Since then, all of the company's activities have been aligned with its two largest customer groups. BPW serves vehicle operators as an international mobility partner whose products and solutions keep trailers reliably on the road, all the while minimising costs and downtime as well as optimising processes and routes. For vehicle manufacturers, BPW is a system partner that supports a broad range of vehicle concepts with a comprehensive portfolio of products and services – from the mass market to special-purpose and custom-built vehicles. BPW makes its know-how available to manufacturers as early as the vehicle design phase.

Innovation strategy

BPW actively contributes to shaping the trends of digitisation, electrification, and urbanisation. It has established an innovative corporate culture – its Innovation Lab in Siegburg and Innovation Lab for mechatronics are think tanks where interdisciplinary teams develop promising solutions for the transportation industry and make a decisive contribution to accelerating the Group's innovation. In addition, the company's ideas workshop in Wiehl is a space that encourages lateral thinking. BPW employees are also encouraged to keep an open mind, try out new ideas and rethink old ones in their day-to-day work. To this end, BPW makes a conscious effort to create the space required to think about new ideas. This approach also closely involves customers.

GLOBAL COMPACT.

For generations, BPW has successfully pursued initiatives that protect the environment and conserve resources, ensure safe and humane working conditions and promote a sound management culture. This also includes integrity and transparency toward our market partners, employees, and the public. For this reason, BPW joined the United Nations Global Compact in 2016, the world's largest and most important initiative for responsible corporate management. BPW implements the Compact's ten principles as follows.

BPW has merged the integrity it has long practiced into a global compliance concept. The company is developing a scheme to restructure the basic principles and rules of good corporate governance, which will then be refined and put into practice with employees and partners around the world.

Principle 1: Businesses should support and respect the protection of internationally proclaimed human rights.

As a German company, BPW is committed to European values and to its social responsibility. Protecting human freedom, security and health forms the basis of BPW's management guidelines and code of conduct, and applies to all employees of BPW Bergische Achsen KG.

Principle 2: Businesses should make sure that they are not complicit in human rights abuses.

BPW requires its business partners to follow a comprehensive set of quality standards. These include transparent business practices, the observance of environmental standards, national and international law as well as respect for human rights. The company's main sources of raw materials and commodities are situated in Germany and Europe.

Principle 3: Businesses should uphold the freedom of association and the effective recognition of the right to collective bargaining.

BPW is explicitly committed to employee participation and supports both workforce and trade union representation. In addition to this, BPW actively promotes political and social education, especially for apprentices and young professionals.

Principle 4: Businesses should be committed to the elimination of all forms of forced and compulsory labour.

Qualified and motivated employees are the basis of BPW's long-term success. For this reason, BPW attaches a great deal of importance to safe working conditions and, wherever possible, long-term job security, preferably by offering permanent employment.

Principle 5: Businesses should be committed to the effective abolition of child labour.

As a family-owned company, BPW is especially committed to the protection of children. BPW requires suppliers, service providers and their subcontractors to observe international law. Of course, this also includes protecting children.

Principle 6: Companies should support the elimination of discrimination in recruitment and employment.

BPW does not tolerate any form of discrimination. All employees – irrespective of their gender, age, skin colour, culture, ethinic origin, sexual identity, physical constitution, religion or beliefs – are to be treated equally. Internationally recognised human rights are to be respected. These principles are comprehensively regulated by the BPW code of conduct.

Principle 7: Businesses should support a precautionary approach to environmental challenges.

In all of its business activities, BPW is committed to protecting the environment and conserving resources and energy. For instance, BPW's energy and environmental management system is certified to international standards, and the company consistently expands on this commitment. Suppliers are also selected according to these criteria and audited on a regular basis

Principle 8: Businesses should undertake initiatives to promote greater environmental responsibility.

With its research and development work, BPW is also committed to fostering the acceptance and growth of electromobility as well as technologies that protect the environment and natural resources in the transport and logistics sector. The company promotes beacon projects in this area.

Principle 9: Businesses should encourage the development and diffusion of environmentally friendly technologies.

At their core, all of BPW's products, innovations, and R&D activities seek to improve the efficiency of logistics and transport processes. This approach is reflected in trailblazing innovations in the fields of electromobility, noise reduction, tweight construction and digitally interconnected transport.

Principle 10: Businesses should work against corruption in all its forms, including extortion and bribery.

Compliance with the law, honest and responsible behaviour, non-discrimination, and the fight against corruption are thoroughly regulated by the BPW code of conduct. BPW also requires its suppliers and business partners to act accordingly. In addition, it maintains its own compliance organisation.

PEOPLE.

BPW employees feel at home in the company and remain loyal: a sense of belonging, trust and a commitment to social responsibility are core components of our corporate culture. This is confirmed by regular employee surveys and prizes that BPW has earned as one of the best employers and training companies in Germany.

The company's identity and its employees' sense of belonging lay the foundation for innovation. Our employees are the protagonists of a corporate strategy that has redefined all of our structures and processes since 2015. A sharp focus on customers and the future now defines our management culture and HR policy. The new approach has also given our employees more freedom and the space they need to assume responsibility for their own actions, and is promoting life-long learning and the development of individual talents. The same concept applies and continues to evolve throughout BPW Group.

EMPLOYEES: STRUCTURE AND DEVELOPMENT.

BPW Group has 6,929 employees around the world (as of December 2016). The total reflects a year-on-year increase of 8.8 percent. This growth mirrors the company's ongoing success in an exciting market environment, strategic acquisitions in the spare parts trade, and consistent investment in innovative business segments. BPW is creating numerous attractive new jobs, especially in the areas of electromobility and intelligently interconnected transport. The proportion of women working in the metalworking industry is traditionally low. At BPW the figure stands at 12 percent, which poses a challenge as regards HR development. By promoting individual talent, family-friendly work structures, flexible work-time models and childcare offers, BPW supports the endeavour to achieve a healthy balance between work and family life.

Freedom for creativity

Doing is better than talking: this is one of BPW's management guidelines. The company also offers employees the opportunities they need to think creatively and laterally across departments and disciplines, for instance in its ideas workshop. This workshop not only offers the space needed to formulate visions for transportation of the future, but also provides an opportunity to discuss and try out new ideas. This is why the BPW ideas workshop is so large that a complete trailer can be parked in it.

TRAINING AND INITIATIVES FOR CHILDREN AND YOUNG ADULTS.

One of Germany's best training companies

BPW is recognised as one of Germany's best training companies. At its own training centre, the company offers instruction to 120 young people each year in more than 20 commercial and technical occupations. In addi - tion, BPW hosts seminars, projects, foreign assignments and talent programmes with the aim of supporting career development in the most comprehensive way possible. Training courses can also be combined with bachelor's degree programmes.

Top opportunities for students

BPW is also committed to supporting university students: it offers internships, scholarships, and opportunities in the company to write theses and dissertations at the company. Once they have completed their studies, graduates can look forward to a permanent position and the chance to take part in an international talent programme. In its innovation centres for electromobility, mechatronics and interconnected transport, BPW applies a policy of filling positions with young talent. Here, it is not only the technology and work environment that are innovative. The teams enjoy an especially high level of freedom to make their own decisions and adopt progressive methodologies.

Targeted help to get started – not only for high achievers

BPW is committed to supporting young people start their careers in a number of ways - and not only for high achievers with top marks. This initiative includes the Starter Programme, which provides young people with learning difficulties with the basic skills they need to get started in the world of work. The programme was launched five years ago in cooperation with regional schools. Over a period of ten months, pupils take part in an intensive, comprehensive training programme.

„By way of the Starter Programme, we want not only to provide knowledge, but also to build self confidence. In so doing, we are successfully preparing young people for an apprenticeship: 16 out of 19 young people have begun their occupational training in this program - me. They are now on their way to becoming machine and plant operators, warehouse clerks, industrial mechanics, or metalworking specialists.“

Child researchers on tour

The BPW Youth Fund oversees this initiative to engage preschool children in technical subjects. It focuses on the MINT disciplines –mathematics, IT, natural sciences and technology. Specially trained young BPW employees leave their workplaces several times a year to visit local nurseries and deliver programmes that enable children to learn as they play. The scheme was developed in collaboration with the BPW training centre and schools in Wiehl.

Political education for young adults

Democracy calls for mature citizens. For this reason, BPW offers workshops to trainees, in which they learn how the German political system works and how they can actively contribute to it. In simulation games, young adults even take part in a mock city council session at the council hall.

BPW Jugendfonds

The BPW Jugendfonds e.V. (Youth Fund) was founded in 2001 with the aim of providing children and young people from Wiehl and the surrounding area with individual support. The fund assists gifted children and juveniles as well as those with special needs. To date, the charitable initiative has used its membership fees and donations to sponsor over 100 projects.

SAFETY, HEALTH AND WELL-BEING.

Good health entails more than the absence of disease. BPW pursues a com - prehensive approach to promoting the safety, health and well-being of its employees - from the start of their careers to retirement. 

Corporate health management

At BPW the path to health is a short one: there is a doctor's office on site in Wiehl, and the company health insurance plan (BKK) also has a service office there. Both cooperate closely with the company's health management programme, which offers a broad range of measures, including exercise programmes to alle - viate back pain, as well as nutritional counselling and physiotherapy. Employees also have access to the company's own gym, personal trainers and an attractive choice of classes to keep them fit and healthy.

The BPW team's principal activities encompass occupational health examinations, vaccination programmes, and first aid services in the event of accidents or acute illness. The company doctor is also actively involved in the procurement of new machines, work materials, and protective clothing, as well as in the design of new work stations. He also assesses the occupational health aspects of all operations.

Reintegration management

The company doctor and health management services work hand in hand to help employees with health limitations carry out productive and fulfilling tasks. They also support employees returning to their previous jobs after periods of illness.

Ergonomics in the workplace

BPW's health managers train employees individually to correct poor posture, avoid detrimental activities that put their health at risk and to use work aids correctly. Both production and office employees receive the necessary targeted information and active support.

Work and occupational safety

BPW has a comprehensive safety regime that spans safety training for employees, the company medical service and the works fire brigade. When the number of re - portable accidents increased in 2014 and 2015, BPW initiated a long-term safety in - itiative for executives and employees. Since 95percent of accidents are the result of human error, employees receive regular training on how to behave cautiously.

BPW declared 2016 the Year of Occupational Safety, focusing on the principle of attentiveness. The results were good: with only 32 reportable accidents in 2016, the BPW workforce broke the previous record of 33 accidents, which was established in 2013.

Work stations for the over-60s

BPW highly values on the experience and know-how of older employees. With ergonomic work stations tailored to individual needs, the company ensures that people over 60 can continue to work comfortably and pass their knowledge on to their younger colleagues.

Living better

A growing number of people want to lose weight - but, leading a healthy life while striking a balance between personal and professional obligations can be a chal - lenge. This is why BPW offers a six-month active health programme that helps employees lose weight. The course provides training in healthy living, nutrition and exercise that extends to the employees' personal lives. Funded by the compa - ny health insurance plan, the programme includes check-ups, individual nutrition regimes, training sessions and workshops.

Social counselling

Family problems, divorce, financial problems, caring for relatives, the death of a loved one, psychological problems and stress at work are difficult situations from which people often struggle to find a way out. BPW does not leave its employees alone when they are facing such life challenges: its social counselling service is staffed by specially trained employees who are there to listen and find help.

WORK-LIFE BALANCE.

The desire to strike a balance between family life and work is an important incentive for employees when considering a career with BPW, and not only for women. The company cooperates with a nursery and in 2016 launched an afternoon care programme that focuses on sport for children between the ages of five and ten. BPW also offers services for daycare emergencies: in cooperation with AWO, a German NGO, children aged four months to 14 years can take advantage of short-term care services at short notice - for instance, when a single parent falls ill, the regular school or care is closed, or the child's grandparents are unavailable.

ENVIRONMENT.

ENVIRONMENTAL STRATEGY.

Every efficiency gain also means progress for the environment. This is why it is a key aspect of BPW's environmental strategy. The BPW Group's locations are cornerstones of the company's sustainability efforts. The company continuously and systematically reduces the environmental impact of its production activities. In view of its commitment to renewable sources of energy, BPW is considered a role model in its home region.

  • addressing environmental and energy management as an obligation and task of corporate management, and to striving for their continuous improvement.
  • ascertaining and taking into account the potential risks and opportunities in respect of environmental protection, energy utilisation, energy consumption and energy efficiency, in compliance with the statutory provisions.
  • achieving the environmental and energy goals it has set itself.
  • purchasing energy-efficient products and services with a view to continuously improving energy efficiency and reducing environmental impacts while considering economic aspects, and to taking interested parties and the local setting into account during both planning and implementation phases.
  • operating and further developing a certified energy and environmental management system in accordance with internationally recognised standards.


Environmental and energy management systems

BPW's environmental management system is certified according to the DIN EN ISO 14001: 2009 standard. Internal processes aim to achieve continuous improvement and meet ever-stricter standards. The energy management system already meets the DIN EN ISO 50001: 2011 standard.

For almost 120 years BPW has been using renewable energy that it produces itself. As early as 1898, the hammer mill of Bergische Patentachsen Wiehl was using hydropower, and a highly efficient water turbine now operates on the same site. It produces around 330,000 kilowatt hours of electricity per year - enough to meet the power needs of 100 four-person households. In 2016 BPW began oper-ating a photovoltaic system comprising 1,920 solar modules on a roof surface of 3,100 square metres. It satisfies a quarter of the energy needs of the cataphoretic dip-coating machine for surface finishing. Another photovoltaic system is planned at the neighbouring plant in Brüchermühle. It will further increase the proportion of energy that the company produces itself. 

BPW with 100 percent green electricity

In 2017 BPW reached an important energy management milestone. Since the summer it has been procuring all of the energy it consumes from renewable resources. BPW no longer uses power generated from nuclear power, coal or other fossil fuels.

BPW covers 96 percent of its energy needs with electricity, including the green electricity it generates itself and climate-friendly natural gas (48 percent). While diesel accounts for the remaining 4 percent, BPW aims to reduce this figure by using a growing number of electric vehicles for on-site transport.

ELECTRIC CORPORATE FLEET AND ELECTRIC SERVICE STATIONS.

Since 2016 BPW has been working to promote electromobility, including in its own corporate fleet. Its service vehicles are now being ordered with electric or hybrid drives. For the onsite transport of axles, BPW began using 40-tonne electric vehicles this year. For employees, visitors and the growing fleet of its own electric vehicles, the company has set up ten electric service stations that meet state-of-the-art charging technology standards at its three locations in the Oberberg region. Another five service stations are planned.

WATER.

BPW still uses hydroelectricity today. In addition to generating power, it also uses water to cool its production facilities. When it comes to wastewater treatment and disposal, BPW clearly exceeds legal requirements. Water protection plays an important role in the design and monitoring of production facilities. Employees receive intensive training in the handling of substances that are hazardous to water, which has enabled BPW to avoid accidents. Water quality is seamlessly monitored. To ensure the ecological balance of the Obergraben pond, which also serves as a reservoir for the works fire brigade, BPW manages a stock of fish, including around 200 pike.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY.

BPW has set itself ambitious long-term energy reduction targets: by 2020 it intends to reduce its energy costs by around ten percent, compared to spending in 2015. An energy officer monitors and documents the success of the measures being taken. Reducing the cleaning temperature in a component washing machine in production, for example, reduced energy consumption by 90 percent. The high demand for BPW's energy-efficient axles and suspension technologies has increased production volumes and therefore total energy consumption. Measured against average figures BPW has nonetheless reduced relative electricity consumption per axle produced by five percent, and relative gas consumption by three percent. The share of electricity and diesel fuel in the company's overall energy consumption has been decreasing for years as well.

WASTE.

BPW operates a successful waste management system. In 2016 the company reduced waste year-on-year by 80 tonnes. In 2017 it expects to decrease the amount of waste it produces once again. In 2016 the recycling rate dropped to 71 percent as a result of a change in types of waste and new legal requirements. BPW is cooperating with recycling, processing and disposal companies to increase the recycling rate once again. By way of a new initiative, employees are also being asked to actively support better waste sorting.

By producing solar, wind and hydropower, BPW has become a role model. We are proud that we have been meeting all of our energy needs with renewables covered by guarantees of origin since the summer of 2017. This is an important milestone for BPW and encourages us to reduce our energy consumption even further.

PRODUCT RESPONSIBILITY.

In light of the growing number of vehicles on the world's roads, transport and logistics companies bear a special responsibility toward people and the environment. All of BPW's products and solutions aim to reduce consumption, wear, downtime, empty runs, traffic jams, noise and exhaust emissions. Its lightweight solutions, intelligent telematics, outstanding quality and service all boost efficiency and thus reduce environmental impacts.

However, the rapid growth of online retailing alongside urbanisation, and growing criticism of the internal combustion engine also mean that completely new solutions are needed. BPW is responding to these global megatrends with innovations in the fields of electromobility and digital networking.

LIGHTWEIGHT CONSTRUCTION.

Down to the last detail, BPW's axles and running gear systems are designed to achieve maximum efficiency. Lightweight construction solutions help ensure that this target is reached, as do quality, durability and ease of maintenance. Lightweight running gear components make significant fuel savings possible. In turn, this reduces emissions and increases the vehicle's transport capacity. 

  • The EU 6 standard calls for an emission control system that adds 200 kilograms to a vehicle's weight. The lightweight components of the BPW Airlight II running gear system reduces the burden by almost 100 kilogramms.
  • BPW's forged aluminium hub pares the weight of a three-axle unit by 54 kilograms, so that fewer trips are required to transport the same load. Thanks to the decrease in vehicle weight, moreover, less energy is consumed and CO2emissions are lower.

Given the increasing transport volumes around the world, our innovation strategy aims to enhance the efficiency of transport and logistics. In this way we can significantly decrease fuel consumption, exhaust and noise emissions while appreciably reducing wear. Moreover, we can cut the number of unscheduled repair shop visits, breakdowns, traffic jams and unnecessary detours. Digitisation makes it possible for us to transform the trailer from a mere appendage into the workhorse of a digitally, highly efficient form of transport.

eSOLUTIONS.

By way of its eSolutions, BPW is addressing the pressing problems of inner-city delivery traffic. Not only do these solutions replace diesel engines with electric units, but they also represent a holistic concept that opens up new opportunities for transport and logistics companies. eTransport

With the eTransport drive axle, BPW has for the first time made electric transport possible in the vehicle class between 7.5 and 26 tons - a market segment that is rapidly gaining in importance as a result of the booming online retail segment. Its innovative features include integration of the drive in the axle, and the spacesaving location of the battery packs between the axles – out of harm's way in case of an accident. eTransport replaces the conventional powertrain, consisting of a diesel engine, transmission, drive shaft and exhaust emission control system, without adding to the vehicle's weight or reducing cargo space. By varying the torque transferred to each wheel (torque vectoring), it also significantly improves the vehicle's agility and manoeuvrability. Popular commercial vehicle models, such as the MB Vario and Iveco Daily, can easily be retrofitted with BPW's electric running gear system. A prototype is already in service.

ePower

The cooling units of refrigerated vehicles are powered by a separate diesel engine. These diesel engines are very noisy, consume about 2500 litres of fuel per year and emit unfiltered soot and exhaust gas into the air. For this reason, trucks are generally only allowed to deliver to supermarkets during the day. For its ePower solution, BPW has built a generator into the hub, that eliminates customary exhaust gas and noise emissions by generating electricity to power a refrigeration unit when the vehicle's brakes are applied. In giving access to city centres for morning, afternoon, and evening deliveries, vehicle capacity utilisation is enhanced. Drivers, who in the past had to endure diesel engine noise during their breaks, also benefit. 

INTERCONNECTED TRANSPORT.

BPW is rolling out digitisation to create a new level of vehicle, route and freight transparency in the transport sector, and to introduce outstanding interaction between upstream and downstream logistics processes. 

Truck-trailer telematics

The BPW subsidiary idem telematics is the market leader in telematics solutions for trailers from a variety of vendors. By interconnecting trucks and trailers, drivers, dispatchers and, if desired, shippers and recipients can always be informed of a vehicle's position, status, and freight. The appropriate evaluation and presentation of data volumes prevents breakdowns, accidents and unnecessary empty runs. It also encourages the driver to operate the vehicle in a safe and resource-efficient manner. Thanks to its modular and flexible design, the Cargofleet Trailer Gateway telematics solution can be tailored to the customer's needs.

Innovation Lab

Through the Innovation Lab in Siegburg, BPW has teamed up with SAP to create a think tank for the digitalisation of transport processes. The aim is to create a highly efficient Internet of Transport by integrating data from all phases of the transport and logistics process. In this way, transport and production processes can be perfectly synchronised. The Innovation Lab uses innovative, agile methods that allow companies to begin digitising their logistics in a quick and uncomplicated manner.

eTrailer

The trailer is being transformed from a mere appendage into a workhorse of digitally interconnected transport. BPW is researching and developing innovations that will literally enable the trailer to hear, see, and feel. The prize-winning BPW AirSave is an autonomous system that continuously measures and regulates tyre pressure, thus preventing blow-outs. It is scheduled for introduction in 2018. In future, sensors will record the status of other parts and issue warnings before a breakdown occurs. Whenever necessary, the vehicle will be automatically guided to a repair shop for a pre-booked inspection and fitted with the necessary, pre-ordered replacement parts.
