trailer world issue One 2008

Issue One 2008 17 ciation (SVG Bundeszentralgenossenschaft). This means another 45,000 drivers will be re- quired every year to make up the numbers. In view of the generally modest earnings prospects and the poor image of driving as a profession, many companies are going to ex- perience problems in meeting their needs for qualifieddrivers,forecastKarl-HeinzHüßkes, public relations officer of the Association of German Professional Drivers (Bund Deut- scher Berufskraftfahrer). “Set this against the fact that only about 900 young drivers have completed the three-year professional driver training course so far.” In view of this, it will be more advantageous for companies to train the drivers themselves, emphasised Mr. Gockeln and Mr. Röskes. Other compa- nies may take other approaches to train their young drivers. Jürgen Hachenberg, CEO of Fiege/uniserv, reported on one company‘s driver academy that trains truck drivers on 6- month courses. The second topic at the Wiehl Forum con- cerned the additional costs being imposed on transport companies due to changes in the law governing driving personnel intro- duced during 2006 and 2007. Prof. Dr. Sebas- tian Kummer (Vienna Business University) and the President of the German Haulage and Logistics Association Michael Kubenz estimated these additional costs as amount- ing to between 6 and 11 percent, depending on the transport type. However, some strate- gies are at the disposal of logistics and trans- port companies in order to counteract these charges. These include, for example, reducing waiting times during loading and unload- ing by improving organisational procedures or by introducing shift working with the ob- jective of spreading fixed costs. Detlev Krill, head of driver training at Spedition Offer- geld, offered a valuable tip. It is essential to train drivers in using the digital tachograph. Otherwise, transport companies will run the risk of wasting valuable driving time because of incorrect entries. BPW will be holding the 9th Wiehl Forum in two years‘ time. Who knows what will be moving the transport world then… Campaign TOR Significant additional costs BPW boss Uwe Kotz welcomed many of the industry‘s movers and shakers to Wiehl. Prof. Dr. Sebastian Kummer, Michael Kubenz and the discussion leader, Björn Helmke, were in agreement on their review of the EU Driver Directive.
