trailer world Issue Two 2014

Issue Two 2014 33 International Increased scope of deliv- ery Meiller has been fully in- volved in the Eko Atlantic pro- ject for two years now. And it is clear that the project partnership will bear further fruit: “There are plans to increase the scope of de- livery,” confirms Schmidt. The end-user, the identity of which is not precisely known to Schmidt, has about the same number of tip- ping semitrailers of other brands in service in its fleet, but these are already very old and will have to be replaced. About 150 tipping semitrailers are currently working on the project. “Half of them are from us, the other half comprises all kinds of brands, some of them local, some of them older models that cannot be precisely defined,” says Schmidt. As a result, more than 70 additional Meiller tipping semitrailers might be possible. Up to now, the company has sold 50 trailers to Volvo and 30 to MAN. “Our involvement in the tractor vehicle is only to the extent that we equip it with the appropri- ate hydraulics for operating the trailer,” says Schmidt, providing specific detail. The protective wall current- ly being built with Meiller’s help is intended to withstand tidal surges and even one hundred year Atlan- tic storms. That at least according to calculations by the Danish Hydrau- lic Institute (DHI) in Copenhagen. Matthew Ude has already made a contribution to the millions of tons of rock that have been moved so far. And he will continue driv- ing along gravel jungle tracks leading to the quarry, and to the “Great Wall of Lagos”, which only has one road leading to it. And when he looks in the rear-view mirror in his Volvo cab, he will al- ways see something orange behind: his tipping semitrailer from Meiller. (tof) Lagos is the fastest growing city in Africa.
